Lying not quite yet awake, but not quite still asleep
Or have I got it backwards, should I still be counting sheep
Is that rain against the skylight, or a half remembered beat
Where I can't quite catch the timing, as it shuffles on repeat

There's birdsong through the window, there's a rattle in the pipes
Day-break starts to clear it's throat, while the house stirs into life
I tune in to her breathing, soft, and slow, and deep
She's happily oblivious, tangled in the sheets
And I start to cross the space between the dawning and the dream

So I try to stretch the moment, well aware there's no reprieve
Cause the hardest part of any day is the getting up to leave
